Fabulous piccy symbolising the fight against the evils of fascism in Czechoslovakia. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, check out the plaque next to the fountain.

The top of the memorial is shaped like a parachute, and has inscribed the names of the men who participatged in the mission descibed on the nearby plaque, in World War II:

"In tribute to all the Czecholslovak soldiers, airmen and patriots who fell in World War II. From Leamington Spa, in 1941, volunteers from Free Czechoslovak Forces stationed in the town, were parachuted into their homeland to rid it of the tyrant "Protector" S.S. General Heydrich. Two of them JAN KUBI and JOSEF GABÈÍK - accomplished from their mission in May, 1942. They and their companions laid down their lives FOR FREEDOM."

The plans for the assisination of Heydrich were drawn up in Newbold Terrace.

In an act of retribution for the killing of Heydrich, the furious Nazis totally destroyed the village of Lidice. A rose bed nearby commemorates this.

Thanks for the book, Milly!!
